With opportunities for women to thrive in the e-sports ecosystem still falling by the wayside, one e-sport holds firm and stands tall amongst the masses. Enter this year’s VCT (VALORANT) Game Changers Championship, which is set to take place in São Paulo from 22 October up until 1 November 2026 and organised by RIOT Games (the developers of games such as League of Legends and VALORANT). This prestigious tournament is part of the VALORANT Esports’ Game Changers tournament circuit, which serves as a home for women and people of marginalised genders. This tournament is no new face in the VALORANT scene, with a long history dating back to 2021.

In February 2021, VALORANT announced the launch of Game Changers to “provide experience and a spotlight to elevate the women in the VALORANT community”. The circuit took shape in March of 2021, with 2 main tournaments, namely the Game Changers Series and Academy, in North America. Later in the year, it expanded into additional mainline regions, namely Brazil/Latin America, EMEA, and Southeast Asia/APAC. Many other tournaments were organised outside of this circuit as well, serving the same purposes. Teams such as Cloud9 White (now known as Cloud9 GC) were early trailblazers within the circuit.

2022 ushered in an update to the Game Changers circuit, featuring a Kickoff tournament and 3 Series tournaments across select regions throughout the year, with the most notable addition being the very first Game Changers Championship, which took place in Brazil. This global tournament’s initial format featured the 8 best-ranked teams from different regions in a double-elimination knockout bracket, with every game best-of-three and the grand final best-of-five. G2 Gozen would make history as the inaugural champions of this tournament. From then on, Game Changers became a fully-fledged circuit, with the Game Changers Championship becoming a traditional end-of-year staple and a cornerstone tournament that etched its victors into the hall of fame.

Subsequent champions would become Shopify Rebellion Gold, winning back-to-back championships in 2023 and 2024, and Team Liquid Visa claiming victory in 2025. The former would become the first and only team to ever win two Game Changers Championship tournaments, whereas the latter would be en route to deny Shopify Rebellion Gold a three-peat in Seoul. Over the years, the impact of this circuit was felt online, in person and in-game. The circuit, with consistent support from RIOT Games and their collaborators, established itself as a top-tier tournament for women and marginalised genders. Its regions evolved into the North American, Brazilian, LATAM, Pacific and EMEA regions. The Series evolved into Stages, and it now ran parallel to the mainline VALORANT Champions Tour circuit. History was made, and of the teams that established a high status in the circuit, Shopify Rebellion Gold would go on to become a dominant force in the scene, leaving a trail of trophies in their wake through 2024 until the present. Additionally, they made history as the first all-woman team to qualify for the VCT Challengers league, a male-dominated circuit. Game Changers is now looked at with the same level of respect as the mainline Champions Tour circuit. It gave rise to icons such as Natália “daiki” Vilela, Melanie “meL” Capone and Alexis “alexis” Guarrasi, allowing them to blaze new trails with achievements that few other disciplines can match at such a magnitude, whilst also not confining them to the league alone.

With the circuit nearing its sixth year, its format has also evolved, and the highlight of the year is well on the horizon. Now featuring 10 teams in the double elimination format, allowing more teams to represent their regions. With 8 of 10 teams having qualified, most notably regional champions Gen.G GC, Shopify Rebellion, G2 Gozen and defending champions Team Liquid Visa, there is everything to play for at São Paulo.
