5 students to get their Leaner’s License in a period of 2 Months

by Nanza Platana

On 26 July the UCKAR Student Movement was met with an overwhelming response after posting on their Facebook platform that they would be funding 5 students to get their learner’s licenses.

Alejandro Rubenstein, co-founder of the movement expressed that this movement was born from a need that him and his co-founders, Adrian February, Obakeng Botsheleng and Milisa Mamase recognized amongst the student body.

“It was in December 2020, when one of the ex-SRC members started a campaign to get students home. So, it came out of that and we thought we would formalize it by establishing an NPC,” says Rubenstein.

The UCKAR Student Movement in partnership with a student owned business Mobidigital, came together to bring forth this initiative as they all wholeheartedly believe in holistic and positive contributions into the lives of students of Rhodes University.

Rubenstein states, “We were approached by Mobidigital, they said they are willing to sponsor the 5 students to do their learner’s license and they wanted us to run it as the UCKAR Student Movement.”

Mobidigital co-founders, Marius Rasekele and Ransom Muranda stated, “We decided on the initiative because a lot of students don’t have funds to do their license and most jobs requires the candidate to have a driver’s license. We hoped for this initiative to motivate other businesses to also join in and help.”

Rubenstein pleas with the larger Makana community and business owners to sponsor more people as the response from the student body has indeed showed how many people just need something as important as a learner’s license.

UCKAR Student Movement welcomes donations in the form of money, food, clothing and any other assistance that the community and students can provide.
